An intercom system (from inter = between and communicare = to communicate) is a communication device for the transmission of voice using electrical signals – similar to a telephone.
It is primarily used for internal communication in security-sensitive environments. No handset is required; the system operates hands-free, much like a speakerphone, allowing direct “open” communication.
For this reason, intercom systems are often used to create an independent and reliable communication layer.
Intercom systems typically consist of a central unit connected to several endpoints – in this case, indoor stations – much like a traditional telephone system.
Modern intercom solutions (such as cleanroom, industrial, or emergency call stations) offer full duplex communication, DSP support for quiet environments, or voice-level control for noisy surroundings.
In control centers for security-critical areas, IP-based intercom systems provide versatile interfaces to other technologies, such as:

- PC and building management integration
A home intercom system is an internal communication network allowing connections between rooms, apartments, or between a building’s entrance and a residential unit.
At the entrance, it typically serves as a means of access control.
Today, many systems feature built-in digital cameras and displays, allowing you to see the person you’re speaking with at the door – for enhanced safety and convenience.
