Access Control Security through efficient and modern technology

Rapid digitalisation, new legal frameworks such as the EU GDPR, and increasingly flexible working models are raising the complexity of access control requirements – and traditional mechanical locking systems can no longer keep up.

Modern, secure, and adaptable access is now digital – ideally implemented with a state-of-the-art access control systemequipped with autonomous hardware (such as battery-powered electronic handles or cylinders). These eliminate the need for extensive wiring and allow for cost-effective retrofitting, even in existing buildings.

Access permissions (who – when – where) are centrally managed via a system platform and assigned through identification media (e.g., personal cards, transponders, key fobs) or biometric scans (fingerprint, facial recognition).
This ensures that employees can only move within authorized areas of a building or protected zones. Permissions can be time-limited (by expiry dates or defined time windows), and all movements can be logged via access points.

Types of Identification Media:

  • Active: Contactless ID media (e.g., transponders, remote controls, smartphones) that actively transmit coded signals via radio or Bluetooth.
  • Passive: Contact-based ID media (e.g., smart cards, key fobs, smartphones) activated by RFID readers that decode stored signals.
  • Biometric: Contactless scanning of specific body parts (e.g., hand, fingerprint, face) using intelligent sensors that match current scans to stored reference data.

How the Access Control System Works:

When permission is granted, an actuator (e.g., door opener) is activated to unlock the door.
The system can operate in different modes:

  • Offline: The local controller evaluates access based on stored data.
  • Online: The request is sent to a central server which grants or denies access.

Access control systems can be centrally, decentrally, or hybrid controlled.
In centralised systems, all sensors (readers) and actuators (locks, turnstiles, etc.) are connected to a central control unit, typically located in a secure area such as a server or technical room.

Benefits of Electronic Access Control:

  • Significantly increased burglary protection
  • Flexible, real-time management of access rights
  • Live or delayed entry monitoring
  • Quick and easy system expansion without limitations
  • Coordinated visitor control
  • Unlimited access profiles definable
  • Real-time door status monitoring
  • Integration of emergency features (e.g. panic or lockdown functions)
  • Immediate deactivation of lost ID media
  • Tamper detection and alarm in case of interference
  • Optional integration with escape route control, fire detection systems, and time & attendance management
  • Lost media are easily replaced – unlike mechanical keys, no need to replace the entire system

Standards for Electronic Access Control:

  • DIN EN 60839-11-1 / VDE 0830-8-11-1:2013-12
Alarm systems – Part 11-1: Electronic Access Control Systems – System and device requirements
  • DIN EN 60839-11-2 / VDE 0830-8-11-2:2016-02
Alarm systems – Part 11-2: Electronic Access Control Systems – Application guidelines

Get ready for the era of facial recognition access control with Hikvision!

Hikvision is one of the world’s leading providers of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, with video as its core technology. A publicly traded company with over 40,000 employees—more than 19,000 of whom work in research and development—Hikvision is uniquely positioned to create cutting-edge solutions that meet diverse market demands and specific customer needs.

Touchless access control systems with integrated temperature monitoring offer a highly effective solution, especially in times like the COVID-19 pandemic, by maximizing protection for employees and visitors. Compared to traditional access control and time attendance devices using fingerprint or RFID media, Hikvision’s MinMoe terminals enable fast and nearly seamless access via facial recognition. Powered by deep learning algorithms, the terminals achieve up to 99% accuracy even in low-light environments.

Equipped with dual lenses—one for visible light and one for infrared—the MinMoe facial recognition system grants access only when both lenses capture the same face, confirming its physical presence. This  anti-spoofing technology significantly enhances security and prevents most unauthorized access attempts.

In addition to locking functions, MinMoe facial recognition terminals can be connected to network video recorders for data recording and storage, as well as to network cameras that provide clear visual context when pre-defined events occur. Hikvision’s MinMoe products now offer numerous third-party interfaces, ensuring broad compatibility with existing door control and attendance systems—enabling quick and cost-efficient integration.

As a  Platinum Partner of Hikvision Germany, meaning we are an officially authorized company with the highest level of expertise, we exclusively offer you the full range of facial recognition access control solutions in Luxembourg.

Key features of Hikvision systems:

  • Facial registration within 3 seconds; stores up to 10,000 faces
