The basic principle of the safety cabinet was already fulfilled by the chests of the Middle Ages. The first safes in the modern sense existed around 200 years ago, even if their equipment is not comparable to that of today. Depending on the security level, the body and door of a modern safe are single-walled or multi-walled with a thickness of up to 20 centimeters. Depending on the required burglary resistance, the steel walls are filled with insulating materials, plastics, concrete or a combination thereof. Materials and mechanisms are used that hinder or render ineffective burglary tools in order to significantly increase the effort required for forced opening. For example, carbon particles in a concrete filling or hardened steel pipes filled with steel balls can quickly dull drills or cutting discs. Chemical additives with a flame-retardant function make it difficult to use cutting torches. In addition to the common name “safe”, it is also known as a safe, safe, safe or security cabinet. It is important that there are technical terms that can be used to identify the respective security standard:
Safety cabinet (EN 14450 with classification S1 or S2)

Explanation of standards and classifications:
The UNI EN 14450:2018 standard classifies security cabinets for private use according to their level of resistance to burglary. A distinction is made between security levels S 1 and S2. The certification is based on extensive break-in tests with various mechanical and thermal break-in tools, e.g. drills, hammers or welding torches. For the certification, the degree of resistance of the weakest area identified (expressed in Security Units – SU), the total duration of the opening attempts, the anchoring test and the severity of the burglary tools used (Tool Points – TP) are taken into account.
UNI EN 1143-1 classifies safes, strongroom doors and strongrooms for commercial use in 14 security levels from 0 to XIII. The disruption tests are carried out in special laboratories. Grades 0 to X are determined in two tests that separately test how long it takes to partially or completely break open the safe (total access). The tests give two resistance units (RU), which correspond to a resistance level. The overall resistance level of the safe corresponds to the lowest level achieved. In order to achieve higher levels for armored doors, only a total access test is required.
